Iraq: CMC issued new Draft Regulatory included Licensing Exemptions for SRD & UWB Devices

2025-05-23

Iraq Communications and Media Commission (CMC) issued a draft regulatory framework for Short-Range Devices (SRDs) and Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technologies.

The draft framework proposes a simplified, license-exempt operating model for compliant devices. This approach aligns with international standards and is designed to accelerate the deployment of next-generation wireless technologies across Iraq.

Key Objectives

· Streamline the deployment and operation of eligible telecommunications devices

· Eliminate the need for individual licenses for low-power, non-interfering devices

· Encourage innovation and market access

· Ensure regulatory clarity in the evolving wireless ecosystem

Devices Eligible for Exemption

Devices that may qualify for license-free operation include:

· Remote controls

· Wireless keyboards

· Public Wi-Fi hotspots

· Certain satellite terminals

· Other compliant SRD and UWB-based equipment

Entities using exempt devices must fully comply with the CMC’s technical and operational standards. Non-compliance may lead to enforcement actions.

The CMC has launched a public consultation process to gather feedback from stakeholders, including manufacturers, operators, and industry professionals. The feedback will help shape the final version of the regulatory framework.
