The India Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has issued implementation guidelines for the certification of Extended Reality (XR) products, which include Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), and Mixed Reality (MR) devices.
These guidelines follow a notification issued by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) on 29 October 2025, mandating XR products for BIS CRS certification.
The notification also allows concurrent running of the old standards — IS 13252-1 or IS 616 — along with the new standard IS/IEC 62368-1, only until 1 May 2026.
After this date, licenses based solely on the new standard (IS/IEC 62368-1) will remain valid.
These publications are intended to help stakeholders understand how the revised standard should be applied and how products should move from earlier requirements to the updated compliance framework.
