The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has issued a legislative update amending the 2021 Compulsory Registration Order (CRO) by specifically including Standalone Hard Disk Drives (HDDs/Hard Drives) under the list of regulated electronic goods.
As per the notification, Standalone Hard Disk Drives (HDDs/Hard Drives) will now be required to comply with Indian Standard IS 13252 (Part 1): 2010.
The mandate for these standalone storage devices is scheduled to come into effect from 05 November 2026.
Previously, the following storage devices were already covered under the existing regulatory framework:
• USB Type External Hard Disk Drives
• USB Type External Solid-State Storage Devices (capacity above 256 GB)
