India: BIS Extends CRS Registration Validity to 5 Years

2026-06-03

Based on recent BIS Conformity Assessment Amendment Regulations, 2026, the validity of BIS registration has been extended to 5 years, replacing the earlier 2-year validity period granted at the time of registration.

With this change, manufacturers can now obtain both new registrations and renewals with a validity period of 5 years. Earlier, new registrations were granted by default for 2 years, while renewal applications could be submitted for validity periods of 2, 3, 4, or 5 years.

However, although the registration validity will remain 5 years, the applicable grant or renewal fees must still be paid annually to keep the registration active.

Key Highlights:

  • BIS registration validity has been increased to 5 years.

  • Manufacturers can renew the R-number only for 5 years.

  • Every year, manufacturers are required to submit production data along with the applicable annual fees.

  • BIS will allow manufacturers to complete the annual renewal process in advance, before the prescribed due date.

Please note that if BIS does not receive the required production data along with the annual fees, provisions related to suspension, deferment, cancellation, or expiry of registration, as specified under the BIS (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018 (as amended in 2026), will be applicable.
